At a time when threats to Indigenous Peoples and their territories are increasing, creating spaces where they can share their stories, skills, and experiences is a powerful response and act of solidarity. This was the intention behind Earth Defenders Toolkit (EDT): a platform and network to support, articulate, and amplify the work of frontline environmental defenders across the world.
The EDT contains profiles of tools that could be helpful and use cases describing how groups are using them to defend their territories. Three tools are currently highlighted: Mapeo for mapping and monitoring, Terrastories for recording and sharing stories, and Āhau an application from Aotearoa (New Zealand) for recording genealogies and cultural archiving, but there are plans to increase the number of tools profiled and usecases described.
However the toolkit is not simply about the tools: the experiences and co-creation processes behind each technology integrate a network of relationships and partnerships that sustain it.
This network of people and organizations met together in the Ecuadorian Amazon in May 2023, during the Earth Defenders Toolkit Gathering, convened by Digital Democracy. In this video, partners and allies from Waorani, Siona, Wayana and Mohawk territories, share their experiences with using these tools and the inspiring connections that were nourished at the Gathering.

¿Qué es el Earth Defenders Toolkit o la Caja de herramientas para personas defensoras de la tierra?
En un momento en que las amenazas a los pueblos indígenas y sus territorios van en aumento, crear espacios donde puedan compartir sus historias, conocimientos y experiencias es una respuesta poderosa y un acto de solidaridad. Esta era la intención de la Earth Defenders Toolkit (EDT): una plataforma y una red para apoyar, articular y amplificar el trabajo de personas defensoras del medio ambiente de primera línea en todo el mundo. El EDT contiene perfiles de herramientas que podrían ser útiles y casos de uso que describen cómo los grupos las están utilizando para defender sus territorios.
Actualmente se destacan tres herramientas: Mapeo para mapear y monitorear, Terrastories para registrar y compartir historias, y Āhau, una aplicación de Aotearoa (Nueva Zelanda) para registrar genealogías y archivos culturales, pero hay planes para aumentar el número de herramientas perfiladas y casos de uso descritos. Sin embargo, la caja de herramientas no se limita a las herramientas: las experiencias y los procesos de co-creación que hay detrás de cada tecnología integran una red de relaciones y asociaciones que la sustentan.
Esta red de personas y organizaciones se reunió en la Amazonia ecuatoriana en mayo de 2023, durante el Encuentro de personas defensoras de la Tierra, convocado por Digital Democracy.
